In short:an open makeup bag may look fine when empty, but it's still unacceptable when filled. Before approving samples, be sure to fill it with actual bottles, jars, eyeshadow palettes, brushes, and accessories. Then check the available space, divider stability, zipper smoothness, brush spacing, cleanliness, balance, and other production details that must be consistent throughout mass production.

When buyers evaluate custom cosmetic bag samples, their first reaction is usually visual: the colors look right, the logo is centered, and the overall shape is close to the drawing.

That's not enough.

An empty bag cannot reveal whether the zipper will get stuck in a corner, whether the divider will tilt and squeeze into storage space, or whether the brush will press against the cap after the product has been filled. These problems usually only appear after the product has been filled.

For custom cosmetic bag manufacturers, useful sample testing begins with packing the same product that will be packed into the bag after the official launch.

1. Do the dimensions of the outer packaging match the actual dimensions of the product inside?

First, list the actual products, not just the finished dimensions of the bags. Include actual bottles, powder compacts, eyeshadow palettes, brush sets, and accessories in the sample. If you don't have the final product, use items with the same diameter, height, weight, and shape as a substitute.

  • Can all items be packed in without forcibly zipping them up?
  • Is there enough space above the tall bottle?
  • Can a user retrieve a product without first retrieving all other items?

In theory, even if the packaging bag can be closed, it may still be too tight for everyday use. If customers have to press down on the items inside the bag to close it, then such packaging bag may look good in a sample display, but it will certainly generate complaints after it is released to the retail market.

For layout options, buyers can compare different types of cosmetic bags and their internal layoutsbefore finalizing the first sample .

2. How much usable capacity is left after adding partitions?

Dividers help organize items, but they also take up space. Once you've packed the items you need, the thickness of the dividers, the binding, the Velcro, and the pocket structure all reduce the usable space. Therefore, always ask the manufacturer for the actual dimensions of each compartment, not just the overall dimensions of the bag.

Based on our factory's experience, a fixed partition layout provides more stable product positioning once the product mix is determined. The final layout still needs to be validated using actual loaded products on approved samples.

3. When the package is full, does the zipper still work smoothly?

When testing zippers, the bag should be filled with items, not just empty. Fill the sample bag to its intended working capacity. Zip up the zipper from both directions and repeat the test at the corners, as internal items and dividers may press against the zipper tape.

  • Check the resistance of the zipper at the corners.
  • Check if the lining or partition edges are caught in the zipper.
  • Check if the bag is twisted when it is sealed.

Don't solve all zipper problems simply by choosing a larger zipper size. First, find out what's squeezing the zipper.

4. Will the partition remain in its original position after repeated use?

The dividers that appear straight in the product images may collapse after repeated opening and closing and handling of the bag. Please test the sample by repeatedly loading and unloading items. Slightly rotate the bag, lift it by hand, and then open it again.

During our sample development process, the partitions used to support the bottles may employ a thin EVA or PE support layer, double-sided lining, and sufficient Velcro contact area. The required support strength depends on the weight of the bottle, the height of the partition, the structure of the packaging bag, and the buyer's requirements for flexibility.

The issue isn't whether the partition is "hard" or "soft," but whether it can separate items without affecting the packing process.

5. Is the brush set suitable for actual use?

Please use the matching brush set for evaluation. Check that the brush handle fits snugly and does not bend, that the brush head contacts the cap, that the elastic band is neither too loose nor too tight, and that the user can remove one of the brushes without affecting the other brushes.

If the buyer is selling a set of makeup bags, then the design of the brushes section should revolve around that set. If the bags are being sold empty, then a more flexible layout might be more practical.

6. Under normal use, can the lining, binding, and pockets be washed?

Makeup bags are prone to getting stained with foundation, powder, face cream, and other cosmetics, and occasionally they may even spill out. Check if the powder is easy to clean from the corners, if the face cream accumulates at the edges, and if the pocket material is prone to getting stained.

The claim of "easy to clean" should be consistent with the actual materials and construction of the product. If a bag has seams, binding, mesh pockets, or fabric areas, it should not be automatically described as completely waterproof or leak-proof.

For consumer-facing care terminology, please refer to this cosmetic bag cleaning guide.

7. Does the bag remain balanced when carried by hand or opened?

Place the heavier bottles in the designated compartment. Hold the sample bottle by the handle, place it upright, and open it on a flat surface. Check if the sample bottle is tilted forward, if the opening is too wide, or if too much weight is concentrated on one side.

Based on our factory's experience, reinforcement with EVA panels, foam, or sheets should only be considered where the bag requires support after loading, such as the bottom, side walls, lid, partition areas, or handle connections. Adding support can improve the bag's shape retention, but it may also increase material usage, assembly workload, packaging volume, and shipping weight.

8. What details must be included in the production specifications?

If the details of the approval are not documented for production, then obtaining sample approval alone is insufficient.

  • Finished product dimensions and tolerances
  • Outer material, lining, color and surface treatment
  • The placement of the divider, supporting materials, and Velcro fasteners
  • Zipper type, zipper pull, and zipper color
  • Logo design, size, location, and color reference
  • Handles, binding, sewing, packaging methods and number of cartons

If a particular point is crucial during the sample approval process, it should be clearly listed in the production specifications. Otherwise, the factory and the buyer may have different interpretations of the same sample during mass production.

What should a buyer provide before requesting an open cosmetic bag sample?

Send a product list to the factory, including dimensions and weight, reference pictures or sketches, preferred material orientation, logo design, expected order quantity, and packaging requirements.

Before creating a custom sample, Pengtuer can review the product dimensions, intended use, material selection, and packaging requirements. Explore custom flexible packaging manufacturing solutions, or provide a product list and reference images to obtain a custom quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I check if the sample is suitable before putting the product into the cosmetic bag sample?

No. Please fill the sample with the actual product or a substitute of the same size and weight before approval. An empty bag cannot show the actual capacity, zipper pressure, divider stability, or balance issues.

Are removable partitions always better?

This isn't always the case. Removable dividers offer flexibility, while fixed dividers provide more stable product placement for specific cosmetic sets. Which option is better depends on the product range and expected user behavior.

How should I test the zipper on a cosmetic bag sample?

Fill the bag to the predetermined capacity and repeatedly open and close it, paying particular attention to the corners. Check the dividers, lining, or product edges for any obstructions that might jam the zipper.

If the pockets of a cosmetic bag are made of PVC, can it still be called a waterproof bag?

This isn't always the case. PVC pockets can help keep wet items out or make surfaces easier to wipe clean, but seams, zippers, edging, and other structural details can still allow water to seep in. Before using terms like "waterproof" or "leak-proof" in marketing, clarify their functionality and testing methods.

What information should be included in the final production specifications?

Please provide approved dimensions, materials, colors, partition details, zipper details, logo design and placement, sewing requirements, packaging methods, carton quantity, and any agreed-upon sample references.
